Important Information

The Waiting Weeks is a separate digital support product and does not include a pregnancy scan appointment. It provides general educational and emotional-support information and does not provide a diagnosis, treatment or personalised medical advice. It does not replace NHS antenatal care, your GP, midwife, Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, obstetrician or emergency medical assessment.

Gender Scan Birmingham

The baby’s identity is ascertained by a gender scan. This is performed starting around 16 weeks. If you are less than 20 weeks pregnant, you should ideally have a full bladder as this will enable better image quality. Depending on the baby’s position, the scan may take 5 to 10 minutes to complete. If the baby is lying in an awkward position, and imaging of the gender is not possible, a free rescan will be offered.

Ultrasound alone cannot be used to determine a baby’s sex with 100% accuracy. The size of the woman, the position of the baby, and gestation are some variables that could impact this accuracy. Additionally, there’s a chance that before 16 weeks, testicles might not have descended, leading to inaccurate results. If the gender is incorrect at 16 weeks or more, UUD will reimburse the entire cost of the scan.

Findings will be discussed immediately after the scan. If you do not wish us to reveal the baby’s gender in the scan room, please do let us know before your scan. We will give you a gender scratch card to take home with you, or you can purchase a canon from us for your surprise gender reveal. You will receive a report and images with a short video showing the heartbeat and any baby movements via email on the same day. The short video clip will be memories you can keep, and it enhances the emotional connection between the unborn child and their parents.

Obstetrics (Pregnancy Scans)

Early Pregnancy

Early pregnancy is performed from 6 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. Depending on the stage of the pregnancy, the scan can confirm a single or multiple pregnancy, heartbeat and an estimated due date. The scan can also reveal if it is an ectopic pregnancy. The first day of the last menstrual period serves as the basis for determining the gestation. Healthcare professionals use the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP) as the starting point for estimating the gestation or dating the pregnancy. Gestational dating is based on the assumption that ovulation and conception occur approximately two weeks after the start of the menstrual cycle.

Reassurance Ultrasound Scan

For your peace of mind, we offer reassurance scans at any stage of the pregnancy from 6 weeks. Depending on the stage of the pregnancy, the scan will provide you with visual movements, heartbeat, and the baby's well-being, reducing any stress and anxiety.

The scan may take up to 20 minutes. The sonographer will discuss any immediate findings with you. You will receive a report and images with a short video showing the heartbeat and any baby movements via email on the same day. The short video clip will be a memory you can keep, and it enhances the emotional connection between the unborn child and their parents.

Please Note

The early pregnancy and reassurance scans are performed transabdominally. You will need a full bladder. If on the day of the scan your pregnancy dates are earlier than expected and your baby is too small to be visualised clearly on a transabdominal scan, you have the option to pay £85 for a transvaginal (internal) scan. A transvaginal scan provides a more detailed view.

Cervical Length Scan

This is ideally performed between 16 and 22, plus 6 weeks of your pregnancy, to assess and measure the neck of your womb. This helps to identify if you are at risk of having a premature delivery. The scan will help your obstetrician or midwife to decide whether you should be considered for a cervical stitch or cervical cerclage.

Some of the reasons for performing a cervical scan are if you have experienced previous miscarriages or previous early deliveries or if a procedure was performed on your cervix, such as laser surgery. The scan may take up to 20 minutes.

Dating Scan

A dating scan is offered at around 10 to 14+1 weeks of pregnancy and may take up to 20 minutes. It is used to determine how far along in your pregnancy and the expected date of delivery. Ideally, you need a full bladder for better visualisation.

Growth and Fetal Well-being Scan

A Growth and Fetal Well-being ultrasound scan can be performed from 24 to 40 weeks of pregnancy or past the due date to check the growth and health of your baby. Serial growth scans can also be performed during pregnancy at 28, 32 and 36 weeks for reassurance or if you have any particular concerns.

The scan will look at your baby’s movements, the position of the placenta, fetal presentation, and the amount of amniotic fluid (AFI), including measuring the baby's head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC) and femur length (FL). These measurements are plotted onto growth charts and used to calculate the baby’s current weight (Estimated Fetal Weight – EFW) to get an indication of the size your baby will be at birth. However, this is best predicted from 28 weeks of gestation onwards. The scan will also assess the umbilical artery Doppler blood flow in the umbilical cord blood vessels. The scan may take up to 20 minutes.

Anomaly/20 Week Scan

Anomaly/20 week scan is a detailed scan to check your baby’s anatomical structures and development. It also assesses the placenta and amniotic fluid. The initial scan is performed between 18 – 20+6 weeks; however, it can still be performed up to 22+6 weeks.

We do offer a rescan free of charge if we are unable to complete the initial scan due to factors like the baby's position. If any abnormalities are detected or suspected, the findings will be discussed, and referral advice will be given to contact your midwife or local antenatal unit. It is well known in the Health Industry that certain abnormalities may not be visible at this stage or are not detected on ultrasound scan.

Reassurance 3D/4D Scan

Reassurance 3D/4D scan can be performed between 23 and 34 weeks of pregnancy, 22-26 for multiples, but the ideal time is between 26 and 30 weeks. The best window is typically around 27–28 weeks, when your baby has developed more fat under the skin, making their facial features clearer and allowing for high-quality 3D/4D images.

A 3D ultrasound provides a still, three-dimensional image of your baby from different angles. A 4D scan is similar, but it also captures movement in real time, so you may see your baby yawning, blinking, or kicking.

If you have an anterior placenta, it’s recommended to book your scan slightly earlier, between 24 and 28 weeks. This gives more opportunity to encourage movement if needed. While it’s still possible to capture 4D images after this stage, it can sometimes be a bit more challenging.

Both 3D and 4D scans enable looking at the baby's features more closely and enable the creation of a more in-depth look at the baby and this shows the contours of the baby’s face, including the mouth and nose.
Whilst this scan is not for the purpose of detecting abnormalities, the Sonographer may be able to pick up issues such as musculoskeletal malformations, problems with facial development such as facial clefts, issues with the hands and feet, or subtle abnormalities that are not necessarily seen in 2D

What is included:-

  • Growth report, includes estimated weight of baby at current gestation
  • Wellbeing assessment includes position of baby and placental position
  • Complimentary gender confirmed if requested
  • Free rescan if baby is not in a good position
  • Images and video recording of the scan, a heartbeat bear with a heartbeat recording

Pregnancy Scan Faqs

How many weeks pregnant can an ultrasound be performed?

Ultrasound is more reliable in detecting a fetal heartbeat from 6 weeks onwards, therefore our early pregnancy scans are offered from 6-15 weeks, before this time your baby may be too small to see on the ultrasound machine. We use your last menstrual period (LMP) in order to estimate how many weeks pregnant you are, in order to see you at the optimal time.

What week is a baby gender developed?

Although a baby’s gender is determined immediately after fertilisation the genital tubercle develops along the same path until around six weeks. Development into male/female genitalia appears similar on ultrasound and it’s not until around 14/15 weeks the gender can become distinguishable. Even from this time, it can be difficult to distinguish gender accurately. Ultrasound is 99.9% accurate from 16 weeks onwards in determining fetal gender.

Are private ultrasound scans superior to NHS Services?

It’s important to attend all NHS ultrasound scans as part of your antenatal care. Private ultrasound clinics also provide a valuable service that can offer extra antenatal scans and reassurance. At our clinic, we offer an intimate scan service allowing more time and flexibility to provide a range of scans at varying stages of your baby’s development. The NHS may not routinely offer these scans. You will be informed of any findings affecting your NHS antenatal care.

Does it make sense to undergo an early pregnancy scan?

We offer private early pregnancy scans for a variety of reasons. You may want a more accurate indication of how many weeks you are. You might be having symptoms you are worried about. You may just want reassurance.

The scan can be used to determine the presence of a heartbeat, the location/position of the pregnancy, the number of babies and how far along you are in the pregnancy.

An early pregnancy scan be a valuable tool in the detection/diagnosis and management of early pregnancy complications. For ladies with acute early pregnancy symptoms or risk factors, an ultrasound scan can provide essential information and/or much-needed reassurance.

What occurs during an appointment for an early pregnancy scan?

We will always start with a scan across your lower tummy (trans-abdominal scan) therefore You will be advised to attend your scan with a full bladder, as it helps the sonographer see your uterus. A lubricating gel and an ultrasound probe will be applied to your lower abdomen/pelvis and moved around to obtain images of your uterus (where we usually see the baby) and the surrounding pelvic area.

Sometimes an alternative ultrasound scan may be offered depending on the results of the trans-abdominal scan. An internal vaginal scan (trans-vaginal scan) may be recommended to give the sonographer a better view of the uterus and around the pelvis.

A transvaginal scan involves carefully inserting a small ultrasound probe into the lower third of the vagina. This scan allows a closer, clearer and better-quality image/view of the uterus so a more accurate assessment can be made. The internal scan takes approximately 5-7 minutes (although this may be longer) and you will be given the opportunity to observe (on-screen) all aspects of the scan if desired.

Altogether your scan may take up to 20 minutes including both ultrasound scanning methods. Internal scans are regularly used in the assessment of early pregnancy and are a safe and relatively painless procedure. You may ask the sonographer any further questions at any time before, during and after your scan.

What may an early pregnancy scan reveal?

The scan can determine the presence of a heartbeat, the location/position of the pregnancy, the number of babies and how far along you are in the pregnancy.

Sometimes results are not as expected and a scan can reveal complications in pregnancy. If any incidental or abnormal findings are seen you will be advised on what to do and who to contact for further management.

Can a heartbeat be detected at six weeks?

Yes, at 6 weeks pregnant ultrasound can detect a heartbeat, however, it may not always be possible to clearly see the heart, as the baby (embryo) is only 6mm long at this stage. You may be offered a vaginal ultrasound to get a clearer view or you may be offered another scan at a later date to allow time for the embryo to develop.

What should I do prior to my ultrasound?

This will depend entirely on the type of scan you are having. Prior to your scan, you will be sent a pre-treatment consent form and scan preparation instructions. The instructions will detail exactly what you need to do before you attend so it’s important to read through these carefully. Following the advice correctly will help the sonographer to get the best possible images during the scan.
