FAQs

What does the ultrasound equipment look like?

The ultrasound machine consists of a computer console, video monitor and an attached probe called a transducer. The probe uses high-frequency sound waves to build a picture of the inside of the body.

How fast will I get the results?

The sonographer will discuss any immediate findings with you and the report will be emailed to yourself or the GP who referred you on the same day, an option to receive images is available for a small charge, as your scan.

If there are any concerning findings, or the sonographer advises a follow up, it will be suggested that you speak to your GP. While the sonographer can explain their findings to you, an ultrasound scan cannot be used to diagnose illness alone and it is important that you speak to a doctor who can interpret the results and explain what further treatment or tests may be necessary. If you do not understand your results, ask the sonographer to break them down in a way that you can easily understand to avoid any misinterpretations. We also urge patients not to google findings in their report as this is subject to wrong interpretation.

What are the limitations of Ultrasound?

Ultrasound waves are disrupted by air and gas and therefore ultrasound scans are not ideal for imaging air-filled bowel, or organs that may be obstructed by the bowel. Ultrasound cannot penetrate areas hidden by bone such as the head or lungs and therefore cannot be used to diagnose fractures or breaks.

Larger patients may also be more difficult to scan using ultrasound because of the greater amounts of tissue. This can weaken the sound waves and thus affect the images.

What is a tumour?

A tumour is a solid mass of tissue caused by a collection of abnormal cells in one area. Tumours can be both benign and malignant. An ultrasound will be able to detect the presence of a tumour however it will not be able to differentiate between the types.

What is a cyst?

A cyst is an abnormal pocket of fluid that has formed on an organ such as the Thyroid. They can range in size from just a few millimetres right up to a heavy “bag” that is noticeable even through the skin. Cysts are most usually harmless however some do require medical intervention to remove.

What is infection?

Infection is caused by germs entering the body and causing an immunological reaction. These reactions can include swelling and fever and may require medical intervention to resolve.
