Hernia & Groin Ultrasound Scan Derby

A swelling, lump or discomfort in the groin can cause you to be worried, specially if it tends to appear when you stand for a long time, cough, lift a heavy item or accidentally strain yourself in that area.

At Universal Ultrasound Diagnostics in Kings Norton, Birmingham, we perform groin ultrasound scans to assess the groin area, including checking for hernia and guide the next steps you may need to take. The ultrasound is non-invasive, safe and does not use radiation.

A groin ultrasound can be helpful if you have symptoms such as swelling that comes and goes, a lump, a suspected femoral or inguinal hernia or groin discomfort. It can also help assess lymph nodes and soft tissues in the groin, which means it is not only looking

When might you need a groin ultrasound?

You may consider a private groin ultrasound if you have noticed:

  • A lump or swelling in the groin
  • A bulge that appears when standing, coughing or straining
  • Groin discomfort, pressure or aching
  • Pain that worsens with lifting or activity
  • Swelling near the upper inner thigh
  • A lump that reduces or disappears when lying down
  • Enlarged or tender lymph nodes in the groin
  • Ongoing symptoms where you want clearer answers

This scan may also be considered in children, teenagers or pregnancy-related situations where radiation-free imaging is preferred, although urgent symptoms should always be assessed through the appropriate emergency pathway.

Some people know straight away that something feels different. Others are unsure whether the area is swollen, muscular, gland-related or possibly a hernia. This is where ultrasound can be helpful, because it allows the sonographer to examine the area in real time and assess the tissues beneath the skin.

Important safety note: when to seek urgent help

Most groin lumps are not an emergency, but some symptoms should be taken seriously. Please seek urgent medical advice if you have a painful groin lump that cannot be pushed back in, sudden worsening pain, vomiting, fever, a red or darkened swelling, severe abdominal pain, or you feel very unwell.

A private ultrasound can help in many non-emergency situations, but it should not delay urgent medical care if a hernia may be trapped or strangulated.

Groin Hernia Scan

What can a hernia and groin ultrasound show?

A groin ultrasound can assess the inguinal canal, soft tissues and lymph nodes in the groin. It can help identify whether a lump or swelling may be linked to:

  • An inguinal hernia
  • A femoral hernia
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • A soft tissue lump
  • A fluid collection
  • Inflammation or other structural changes

If a hernia is seen, the scan can help show where it is and how it behaves during the examination. You may be asked to cough, gently strain or change position so the sonographer can check whether anything moves through the groin area when pressure increases.

This is often important because some hernias are more noticeable when standing or straining and less obvious when lying flat.

What happens during the scan?

Your appointment begins with a short discussion about your symptoms. The sonographer may ask when you first noticed the lump, whether it changes in size, whether it is painful, and whether coughing, lifting or standing makes it more obvious.

You will be made comfortable and asked to expose the groin area being scanned. Warm gel is placed on the skin, and the ultrasound probe is moved gently over the area.

The scan is usually comfortable. If the area is tender, please let the sonographer know. You may be asked to cough, gently strain, stand or adjust your position if this helps to assess the lump more clearly.

Your dignity and privacy will be respected throughout the appointment.

What is the difference between an inguinal and femoral hernia?

An inguinal hernia usually appears in the groin area and is more common in men. A femoral hernia tends to appear lower down, near the upper inner thigh, and is more common in women. A scan can help assess the location of the swelling, but your GP or specialist will advise on diagnosis and treatment.

Do I need a GP referral?

What if the scan confirms a hernia?

If a hernia is seen, your report can be shared with your GP or a surgical specialist. Ultrasound can help identify and describe the finding, but treatment decisions are made by the clinician responsible for your ongoing care.

Should I go to A&E instead of booking privately?

You should seek urgent medical help if the lump is very painful, cannot be pushed back in, becomes red or dark, or you have vomiting, fever, worsening abdominal pain or feel very unwell. A private scan should not delay emergency care if a hernia may be trapped or strangulated.
