When is A Buttock Ultrasound Required?

Aiding in an Injury Diagnosis:

Ultrasounds of the buttocks are frequently used to evaluate injuries to the gluteal muscles (maximum, medius, and minimus), particularly in athletes or people who have bruises, rips, or strained muscles.

For Finding Soft Tissue Masses:

Tumors, cysts, and lipomas in the buttock region are examples of soft tissue masses that can be found with ultrasound technology. Determining the benign or malignant nature of these growths is aided by imaging.

To Evaluate an Infections and Abscesses:

Soft tissue infections and abscesses, which may be caused by bacterial infections or other inflammatory disorders, can be detected with ultrasound.

Pre and post-surgery assessments

Ultrasound can be used for pre or post-surgical buttock implants. Prior to undergoing surgery for buttock implants, an ultrasound can be used for preoperative assessment to check for any tumors or cysts. Following buttock implant surgery, ultrasonography is used to evaluate postoperative failures and other complications of cosmetic surgical implants and to check for any ruptures or leaks. It lowers health hazards through early detection of silicone or saline leaks. Appropriate healing and implant integrity are guaranteed by routine check-ups.

Advantages of Private Ultrasound Scanning

Faster Service Access: When compared to public healthcare systems, private ultrasound scans frequently offer quicker appointments. This can lessen anxiety and expedite diagnosis, giving patients access to the right care more quickly.

Personalised Care: Longer appointment times that enable a more in-depth discussion of your problems and a comprehensive scan are among the more personalised services that private clinics may offer.

Safety: Since there is no radiation, regular examinations are preferable.

Precision: Abnormalities such as tissue response, fluid collection, or implant displacement can be detected with precision.

Comfort: Real-time imaging that is painless and non-invasive.

What does an ultrasound show in the gluteal area?

An ultrasound of the gluteal region will clearly display the layers of muscle, tendons, and bursa. It may show indications of muscular tears, bursitis, or tendinopathy. The ultrasound can assist in determining whether there is inflammation or fluid buildup in the area as well as distinguish between distinct soft tissue types.

Buttock/gluteal tendinopathy

Gluteal tendinopathy can be identified with ultrasound. Imaging helps in the visualisation of soft tissue features like tendons, muscles, and bursae which are frequently implicated in gluteal tendinopathy. Around the greater trochanter, this imaging modality can demonstrate degeneration, the thickness of the tendon, or inflammation.

Can Ultrasound detect inflammation of the buttock/gluteal area?

An ultrasound can reveal gluteal irritation. Gluteal tendinopathy or trochanteric bursitis are two terms used to describe inflammation of the gluteal area. The bursae, which are fluid-filled sacs surrounding the greater trochanter of the femur, or the tendons may be affected by this inflammation. Repetitive stress, trauma, or overuse are frequently the causes of inflammation.

Symptoms of weak buttock/glutes

• Weak glutes can cause a variety of symptoms, such as bad posture or trouble staying stable when doing tasks.
• Lower back pain or tightness in the hips.
• Pain in the hips, knees, or ankles brought on by other muscles compensating.
• Difficulty performing hip-extension exercises like running, squatting, or climbing stairs.
• General weakness or weariness in the muscles during gluteal muscle activities.

What do I wear for a buttock/glute scan?

You will need to wear loose fitting bottoms that can easily be removed so that the sonographer can access the area. The sonographer will make every effort to protect your dignity during the scan.

Do I need to consent to a buttock scan?

All patients must give their consent (permission) before undergoing an examination. If they are unable to give consent themselves then a person with power of attorney will need to give consent on their behalf. Please ensure that the pre-treatment consent form is completed via the embedded link in your confirmation email before you attend the appointment. The scan will not go ahead if this form is not completed.

Are buttock/glutes ultrasound scans painful?

Buttock/glute scans are not painful but they may be uncomfortable as the sonographer will have to gently press the ultrasound scan probe to your buttock.

What are the red and blue blobs on the ultrasound?

During the scan the sonographer may use a colour doppler to check blood flow in your tissue. This will appear as blue and red blobs on the image and are nothing to be concerned about.

What happens during the scan?

The sonographer will put ultrasound gel onto your skin and move a probe over your buttock. They will examine each part of your buttocks multiple times and in different positions to check for any areas of concern.

Do not be alarmed if the sonographer checks the same area again or goes quiet during the exam. They will explain any findings to you in detail once the scan is complete.
