Full blood count (FBC):

A whole blood count test:

The levels of various blood components, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and hemoglobin, are measured by a Full Blood Count (FBC) test. It offers important information about your general health and can assist in the diagnosis of a number of illnesses, including blood disorders, infections, and anemia.

For what purpose is it used?

A test for a complete blood count can be used to: diagnose blood clotting issues, infections, and anemia. Monitor your general health as part of your regular examination. Look for diseases like leukemia that impact blood cells. Evaluate how you react to specific medical interventions.

Why is a full blood count test necessary?

If you experience the following symptoms, you might require an FBC test.
• Weakness or exhaustion
• Inexplicable bleeding or bruises
• Persistent infections
• Dizziness or shortness of breath

This test may also be ordered by your doctor to monitor specific medical conditions or as part of a normal check-up.

Progesterone Blood Test

What is a progesterone test?

The amount of progesterone in a blood sample is determined using a progesterone test. The ovaries, two glands in the female reproductive system that house eggs, are the primary producers of the hormone progesterone. Progesterone gets your uterus ready for pregnancy every month. An ovary releases an egg during a typical menstrual cycle, and your progesterone levels start to increase. To enable a fertilised egg to attach (implant) inside the uterus and develop into a baby, progesterone thickens the lining of the uterus.

If you do not become pregnant, your levels of progesterone will decrease. Your uterine lining will thin out once more. Your monthly cycle will start as soon as your uterus begins to eliminate the excess blood and tissue.

If you become pregnant, progesterone levels will continue to rise to about 10 times higher than usual to support the pregnancy. High levels of progesterone prevent the uterus from contracting (squeezing) and causing pre-term labour. Much of the progesterone you need for a healthy pregnancy is made by the placenta. The placenta is the organ that forms in the uterus to deliver nourishment and oxygen to the pregnant infant.

A progesterone test can help show whether low progesterone levels are causing female infertility (issues becoming pregnant after a year of trying) or problems during pregnancy. Additionally, the test may aid in the diagnosis of specific adrenal gland issues that can result in elevated progesterone levels in both males and females. Other names include PGSN, progesterone blood test, and serum progesterone.

What is a progesterone blood test used for?

A progesterone test may be used to help:

  • Find the cause of female infertility.
  • Check to see if fertility treatments are working.
  • Find out your risk of a miscarriage (loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks).
  • Diagnose an ectopic pregnancy, which is a fertilised egg that implants outside of the uterus. The egg cannot grow into a baby when it is in the wrong place. It must be removed to avoid damage to your organs. This can be a medical emergency.
  • Check the health of a high-risk pregnancy.
  • Diagnose ovarian cancer or problems with your adrenal glands. Your adrenal glands typically produce trace levels of progesterone. High levels of progesterone may be a symptom of an adrenal gland disease in both females and males.

Will I need to do anything to prepare for the test?

Typically, there are no further preparations required for a progesterone test. You might need to know the first day of your most recent menstrual cycle in some circumstances. If you need to stop taking any medications before the test, your doctor will let you know. However, unless instructed to do so by your physician, never discontinue taking medication. It is advisable to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids prior to your blood test to enable easy visibility of your veins.

What do the results mean?

The meaning of your test results depends on:

  • Why did you have the test?
  • Where you were in your menstrual cycle when your blood sample was taken.

High progesterone levels:

When you're not pregnant, it may be linked to:

  • Ovarian Cancer.
  • Your ovaries or cyst.
  • Adrenal gland problems, including adrenal gland cancer, or an inherited disorder called congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH).

Higher than expected progesterone levels when you are pregnant.

High progesterone levels can also indicate a molar pregnancy, which is an abnormal growth of tissue in the uterus caused by a fertilised egg with so many genetic issues that it cannot become a baby. The growth can develop into cancer and needs to be removed. It may indicate that you are expecting two or more children.

Low progesterone levels:

When you're not pregnant, it may be linked to:

  • Pre-eclampsia.
  • Not ovulating normally.
  • Ectopic pregnancy.
  • Not having a menstrual period (amenorrhea).
  • Miscarriage or a high risk of miscarriage.

Your healthcare provider can explain what your test results say about your health.

Is there anything else I need to know about a progesterone test?

Because progesterone levels change throughout your pregnancy and menstrual cycle, you may need to be tested several times.

Liver Function Test (LFT):

What Is A Liver Function Test?

LFT is used to determine how effectively your liver is functioning. Your doctor may request a liver function test to evaluate a number of chemicals in the blood, including bilirubin, proteins, and enzymes.

Does the test require any preparation on my part?

You might have to fast for eight to twelve hours. Observe the guidelines provided by your healthcare provider.

For what purpose is it used?

Identify liver conditions such as cirrhosis or hepatitis, keep an eye on the effects of drugs that could harm the liver and look for indications of inflammation or liver damage.

Why is a liver function test necessary?

If you experience any of the following signs of liver issues, you could require an LFT:

• Pale stools or dark urine
• Jaundice (eye and skin yellowing)
• Nausea, vomiting, or pain in the abdomen
• Exhaustion or inexplicable weight loss
• Additionally, if you take certain medications, it may be performed to monitor liver health or as part of a general health check.

Thyroid Function Test (Thyroid Profile)

What is a thyroid profile test?

To assess the health of your thyroid gland, your doctor can request a thyroid profile test, or you can self-refer. The test analyses the amounts of thyroid hormones (T3, T4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in your blood. The complete profile will consist of Thyroglobulin, Thyroid (Peroxidase Antibodies), Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, Thyroid T3 and Thyroid T4 Blood Tests.

For what purpose is a Thyroid Profile test used for?

Tests for thyroid profiles can be used to:

Identify thyroid conditions like hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, track how well thyroid medicines are working, or to examine symptoms associated with thyroid imbalance or infertility issues that may be caused by thyroid problems.

Why is a thyroid profile test necessary?

This test might be necessary if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Infertility issues
  • Exhaustion or inexplicable weight fluctuations
  • A fast or erratic heartbeat
  • Skin changes or thinning hair
  • Inability to tolerate cold or heat
  • If thyroid issues run in your family

What takes place in the test?

A blood sample will be taken from a vein in your arm by a medical practitioner. The test is short and easy. Keeping yourself hydrated is advised.

Does the test require any preparation on my part?

Before the test, you might need to refrain from eating or taking specific drugs. Observe the guidelines provided by your healthcare provider.

You should think about discussing with your doctor before having some blood tests since they may be able to advise you on whether the test is appropriate for you, what is the ideal stage of your cycle, or the best time of day to have the test.

How are your results quicker than the NHS? Are they as accurate?

We work alongside approved labs that provide services and outcomes that are accurate as well as trusted. Because there is no backlog in private healthcare and laboratory volumes are well controlled, findings can be obtained swiftly.
