Dr Moti Chowdhury is a highly experienced Paediatric Consultant Radiologist with nearly 30 years’ experience caring for babies, children and young people. He has worked in some of the largest and most respected children’s hospitals in the UK and Australia, including Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, and the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

Dr Chowdhury is currently working at Birmingham Children’s Hospital as a Paediatric Consultant Radiologist. He brings a wealth of expertise in paediatric diagnostic imaging, interventional radiology and specialist children’s ultrasound. His calm, child-focused approach helps families feel reassured, informed and supported throughout their appointment.

At Universal Ultrasound Diagnostics, Dr Chowdhury supports paediatric ultrasound scans and consultations, helping parents understand their child’s scan findings and any recommended next steps. His areas of expertise include abdominal and renal tract ultrasound, pelvic ultrasound, neck and thyroid scans, neonatal brain and spine ultrasound, hip ultrasound for developmental dysplasia of the hip, musculoskeletal ultrasound, groin and testicular scans, vascular ultrasound, and the assessment of lumps, bumps and vascular malformations.

Dr Chowdhury also has specialist interests in nephro-urology imaging and vascular anomalies in children. Alongside his clinical work, he is actively involved in the teaching and training of radiology doctors in the UK.

Throughout his career, Dr Chowdhury has remained dedicated to the wellbeing of children and to delivering safe, thorough and compassionate care for every family.

Dr Moti performs the following examinations and procedures:

ULTRASOUND (US):

Abdomen (including renal tract 1), Pelvic US of adnexae (Transabdominal), Thoracic US, Neck US (including thyroid, parathyroid and salivary gland scans), Neonatal brain and spinal US, Musculoskeletal US (MSK) (whole body except shoulders) including US for Developmental Dysplasia of Hips (DDH), Inguinoscrotal US (Hernias, hydrocoeles, groin, testicular US), Peripheral lumps and bumps including haemangiomas/vascular malformations 2, Duplex Vascular US (including for Deep Vein Thrombosis), Liver and Renal transplant US, Renal fistula US. I also perform diagnostic contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) for liver and splenic lesions/trauma and in diagnosis of vesicoureteric reflux.

NUCLEAR MEDICINE:

He has a specialist interest in Nephro-urology imaging, providing diagnostic imaging support (including Nuclear Medicine imaging of the renal tract as an ARSAC Licence holder) and performing Urological Interventional Radiology procedures. In this respect, he is able to provide diagnostic imaging and consultations in this area. He also performs Paediatric DMSA, MAG3 renogram, Direct Voiding Cystogram, Gastric Emptying, Milk Study, MIBG, Bone scan, Meckel’s study, Mebrofenin/ TBIDA study, Brain SPECT, Ventilation-Perfusion scan, thyroid study.

VASCULAR

He has a specialist interest in vascular malformations in children, providing MDT and joint clinic service in paediatric vascular anomalies for at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the West Midlands. Not only does he provide diagnostic ultrasounds, he does Consultations and Interventional Radiology (IR) treatment of Vascular Malformations in children.
He has also provided teaching sessions and Lectures in this area to Radiology colleagues and Clinician groups (General Paediatric Surgery, General Paediatrics, Head and Neck/ENT Surgery, Plastic Surgery) in Scotland and England.

Fluoroscopy: Upper and lower GI studies, Cystograms/ MCUG), Nephrostogram, Cholangiogram, HSG, linogram, Arterio-Venous Fistulogram (assisted), Arthrogram (Hips, wrists, facets, nerve roots), Herniograms, Diaphragm fluoroscopy. Intussusception reductions: Pneumatic, Hydrostatic, Open Surgery

CT and MRI: Head and Neck, Spinal imaging, Body and musculoskeletal, GI (including MRCP, Small Bowel MRI)

Plain film Reporting: General Neonatal and Paediatric plain films, Post-mortem imaging.

INTERVENTIONAL PROCEDURES:

  • Anaesthesia: Ring blocks, Bier block
  • Aspirations: Joints (hips, knees, ganglions), superficial collections, chest, abdominal collections
  • Biopsy (Open/ US/ CT guidance): soft tissue lesions/solid organ/ bone/spinal lesions
  • Drain insertions (chest, abdomen): Pigtail catheters, surgical drains, Tenckhoff PD catheters, nephrostomy
  • Endoscopy: Diagnostic (OGD, Sigmoidoscopy, Colonoscopy), ERCP, laparoscopy
  • ENT intervention: Botox injection of Salivary glands, sialogram, balloon sialoplasty, stone extraction
  • GI intervention: Gastrostomy formation (RIG), oesophageal dilatation, colonic dilatation, gastro-jejunal tube/ PEJ tube insertion, balloon retrieval of oesophageal foreign body
  • Hepatobiliary intervention: T-tube cholangiogram, PTC, Biliary drain insertion, biliary dilatation, stent insertion
  • MSK intervention: Bone lesion biopsy, sclerotherapy of bone lesions, Radiofrequency Ablation of osteoid osteoma/ osteoblastoma, cryo-ablation of bone tumours, joint injections/ aspiration, nerve root injections
  • Neurointervention: myelogram, lumbar puncture, chemical rhizolysis, epidural catheters
  • Respiratory: Bronchogram, ET Intubation, Tracheostomy, tracheal dilatation
  • Uro-intervention: Nephrostomy insertion, ureteric stent insertion, PUJ/ VUJ balloon dilatation
  • Vascular intervention: Angiogram, embolisation procedures (UAE [fibroids; supervised], varicocoele), vascular access (surgical & US guided Hickman/ portacath, PICC, neonatal long lines), sclerotherapy of vascular malformations, Intra-arterial access (femoral, radial), Umbilical (UAC, UVC), Intra-osseous resuscitation.

  • Open Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery ORIF (various fractures), DHS repair, Arthroplasty (hip, knee), Arthroscopy, k-wire/ screw/ plate fixation of various fractures, Carpal tunnel decompression, tendon repair, osteotomies.
