Pelvic/Fertility Ultrasound Scan
Pelvic Ultrasound Scan is an examination that examines the pelvis. The reasons for performing the scan include, but are not limited to:
• Pelvic pain
• Irregular vaginal and postmenopausal bleeding
• Heavy periods
• Fertility problems
• Cause of pregnancy loss (recurrent miscarriages )
• Ovarian cysts and screening for ovarian cancer
• Congenital uterine anomalies
The scan is generally carried out in two parts. The first part is a transabdominal scan which needs a full bladder. The second part is a transvaginal scan which is performed after you have emptied your bladder. If you have never been sexually active, a transvaginal scan will not be performed. Please notify the sonographer performing the scan. The scan takes up to 20 minutes.
Abdominal Scan
An abdominal scan checks upper abdominal organs such as the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen. The exam may take up to 30 minutes. You need to starve for 6 hours prior to your appointment, if you are diabetic it would be advisable to have the earliest appointment. Please take your medications as normal. You may drink water, black tea or coffee, or fruit juice. DO NOT drink milk or have any drink which contains milk. We perform an abdominal scan for adults and children and babies. You do not need a GP referral.
Kidney Scan
A kidney scan is an in-depth study of the urinary bladder and kidneys. This is performed to check for kidney stones, infections, and kidney obstruction. You will need to attend with a full bladder. The scan takes up to 20 minutes and you do not need a GP referral.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) Scan
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) scan: This is used to check for blood clots in the leg veins. DVT symptoms include swelling in one or both legs, cramping or throbbing pain in the thigh or calf, chest pain, breathlessness and warm or darkened skin around the painful area. The scan may take up to 30 minutes. A follow-up scan in 7 to 10 days after the initial scan may be necessary.
SCROTAL TESTICULAR SCAN
Scrotal testicular scan helps to
• Evaluate scrotal mass or swelling (e.g., Testicular tumour, epididymal cyst, Hydrocele)
• Characterise testicular tumour
• Look for the cause of testicular pain (inflammation or infection)
• Assess post trauma
• locate and assess undescended testis
• look at possible causes of infertility/chronic pain (varicocele)
Breast Ultrasound Scan
A breast ultrasound scan is used to check for masses, lumps, tumours and cysts. It can detect leaks or other problems with breast implants as well as abnormalities in the breasts and in the armpits/axilla. Sometimes a breast ultrasound may be used to screen for breast cancer. Including people who have dense breast tissue which reduces the visibility of tumours in mammograms. Also, people under the age of 25 years, or pregnant women who shouldn't be exposed to radiation from a mammogram.
THYROID SCAN
An ultrasound thyroid scan can be used for a number of reasons:
- To assess if a thyroid nodule has significantly grown over time.
- It analyses the appearance of thyroid nodules and determines if they are benign nodules
- To assess any abnormal lymph nodes near the thyroid
- To determine if a lump in the neck is arising from the thyroid or an adjacent structure
- To assess a thyroid that feels big or irregular, called a goitre
- to look for additional nodules in patients with one or more nodules felt on physical exam

Cancellations made over 48 hours in advance receive a 50% refund. Refunds are processed in 7 to 10 working days. No refund for same-day cancellations, missed appointments or cancellations within 48 hours. You can reschedule your appointment once, at any time. If we cancel your appointment due to any unforeseen circumstances, we will contact you to reschedule your appointment within 24 hours, or we will offer a full refund.
